What is 'Rep' Hockey?

How are coaches expected to manage goaltenders in Rep?
Coaches are expected to rotate goalies each game in U11. In U13, U15, and U18, games played should be relatively balanced by end of season.
Goaltenders
See full page →Does my child have to choose between being a player or a goalie? How does the association develop goalies?
In the U7-U9 divisions all players will have the opportunity to try the goalie position. The association provides each team with a set of goalie gear to use for the season. We also offer U8 and U9 players FREE professional goalie clinics every Saturday and Sunday morning at Excellent Ice.
In U11 and up, at time of registration, you must advise if your athlete will be a player or a goalie. That said, there is still opportunity for a player to learn the goalie position. U11 and U13 also have FREE professional goalie clinics on Saturday's and Sunday's at Excellent Ice.
If my child plays goal, are there benefits to doing so?
Children who play goal do have the benefit of borrowing association provided gear thru U11 if they choose. There are also free development ice times provided by the association to encourage playing goal in addition to various additional opportunities that are common for goaltenders. There are no discounts on registration provided to goaltenders.
Do Goalies play every game or every other game in Rep?
Goalies should be rotated every game thru U11 and U13 rep. However, coaches are permitted to choose which goalies play based on the best chance to succeed for that goalie and their team. In U15 and U18, coaches may choose to stay with one goalie for an extended period of time however in any scenario, game play should be close to equal by the end of the season.
Can Goalies be Pulled from Games?
Although not encouraged, coaches are permitted to change goalies during the game if they feel that the current game is not a good situation for the goalie themself, or their team. Should this happen, it is our expectation that there be follow up with the goalie and their parents so that it can be used as a teaching opportunity.
