An Exciting Day for Surrey Hockey and the Future of Ice in South Surrey

Yesterday was an exciting day for the Ravens, as a few of our players had the incredible opportunity to take part in a ball hockey game alongside Mayor Brenda Locke, the Vancouver Giants, and Michael Bublé, as demolition officially got underway for Surrey’s future City Centre Arena & Entertainment District.

It was a memorable day that celebrated not only the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Surrey, but also the important role that sport and recreation play in bringing our community together. And for those of us involved in hockey, there is even more reason to be excited about what the future could hold. According to Rob Costanzo, City Manager for the City of Surrey:

“The City recognizes the growing need for additional ice capacity in South Surrey. Preliminary planning completed with community input identified the Grandview Heights recreation precinct as a strong potential location for future ice facilities, and Mayor and Council have expressed an interest in advancing this opportunity. Subject to Council direction, funding, technical review and all required approvals, the goal would be to move the project through detailed planning and construction during the next Council term. While those necessary decisions have not yet been made, this represents a significant and promising opportunity for the South Surrey community.”

For the Ravens community, this is encouraging news. The need for additional ice has been something our players, families, coaches, and associations have experienced firsthand, and the possibility of expanded ice facilities in the South region could make a tremendous difference for generations of athletes to come.

We are excited to see Surrey investing in its future and, hopefully, creating more opportunities for young athletes to learn, compete, and enjoy the game they love.
